By Homeshare Programs, 2 people decide to live together in order to exchange, in most of cases, help for accommodation. They have their independent life and they agree to offer each other an agreed level of help. Homeshare is never a hospitality service, although it can be agreed that homesharer must cook as a part of the exchange of help.

When a householder decides to invite you to live in, a simple room must be included in the invitation. For that reason, we consider that bed linen must be included in the room provided by the householder.

Initially, householder and homesharer must share all the common areas in the house. However, a special condition could be included in the Homeshare Agreement where certain areas of the house would have limited access according to Householder wish.

Use of house appliances should be possible for homesharer. However, we always recommend to state in the Homeshare Agreement if there is any limitation in the use of any appliance in the same way that limitation for the use of any area in the house.

Homesharer must always ask the householder if family or friends can stay over the night.

Despite of Homeshare program is not a job contract, homesharer has some responsibilities regarding to take part of the program. One of the main issues for householder in taking part of this Homeshare Program is to have someone over the night for safety reasons. Although there is not a unique agreement model, homesharer usually agrees to sleep 5 or 6 nights in the house as a part of the agreement. However, any issue related to take days away or holiday time, must be consulted and agreed with the householder with time in advance to arrange the householder time while homesharer is away.

It is important that all homesharers going abroad, get their own health insurance coverage. In European Countries, it may be possible to get a free European Health Card that covers you in case of needing a doctor, most of hospital expenses and more.

In the case the householder is requiring more help than the initially agreed, homesharer must talk in the best way to let householder know that according to Homeshare Agreement, he/she is doing duties not included in the Homeshare Agreement.

Homeshare is not a job contract, therefore you will never receive a salary. In case you agree with the householder to help with more than 12 hours per week, a financial support can be paid by the householder.

According to Homeshare Agreement, the Agreement may be terminated: a. Upon 7 days’ notice during the first trial month and thereafter at any time by either party upon 2 weeks’ (15 days) notice. b. Immediately if householder or homesharer decides that there has been gross misconduct by either party, an irreconcilable breakdown, a serious breach of the Agreement or some other factor affecting the safe and satisfactory continuation of the homesharing arrangement. In that case the Homesharer will vacate the property immediately, leaving the property and the Householder’s possessions in good order and condition, returning any keys to the property to the Householder and paying any money owing.

It is important to outline that any problem between householder and homesharer must be talked between both parties or even with the householder’s family as families always take important part in the matching process. In case of controversial, both participants must refer to Homeshare Agreement, in order to clarify and minimize the impact of the dispute.

Householder must provide as a minimum a private room with a bed (single or double). The Homesharer occupies their room on a license arrangement. The Householder will respect the Homesharers’ privacy but reserves the right to access the room if necessary. The Homesharer does not therefore have exclusive use of their room and their occupancy does not create a tenancy.

It will depend on the housing resources of the area and the value that the householder considers his accommodation. Usually, Homeshare Program offer rent price considerably below market price.

Financial support to be received when helping householder more than 12 hours, must be assessed by the householder or householder’s family. In general terms and only as a reference, we would recommend paying the homesharer the minimum wage per hour established in householder’s country. When help exceed 12 hours per week. However, some householders can have special attentions, needs or disabilities. In this cases, we would recommend to pay some extra money in order to reward the very important homesharer’s  help.

It is not always common practice within Homeshare to take up references on potential Householders, as they are often seen as being the more vulnerable party. However, it is good practice to take up two written and verbal references from people who know the Householder well, have no vested interest in the Homeshare arrangement and who are not family members. References from Householders can be obtained from:

  • former homesharers
  • a local person or doctor
  • Even though it's not very common, it might be a good idea to ask the householder for a certificate of good conduct.

It will exclusively depend on Householder, although we recommend that rent price must be attractive for homesharer. It could be about half price that market price in order to be more appealing. However, it will also depend on how many hours have been agreed to help the householder

As each agreement is different we recommend that Householder must consider individually how much they are going to pay to the homesharer for his help exceeding 12 hours per week.
